Key takeaways

  • Google began rolling out Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto on Oct. 20, 2026, with cars that have Google built-in promised "in the coming months."
  • The feature is opt-in: you turn it on in the Gemini app or website under Settings > Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps, and those connections carry over into the car.
  • According to PCMag, you must be over 18 with a personal Google account, and PCMag and Engadget both say it's unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria.
  • You can turn it off at any time or limit which apps Gemini reads, and Google says navigation, music, calls and questions keep working without it.

Google started rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini in Android Auto on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026. It lets the in-car assistant draw on Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search to tailor its answers to you. It’s off until you switch it on, and you decide how much of your data it touches.

The setup details are scattered across several write-ups, so this pulls them into one walkthrough.

Who can use Personal Intelligence in Android Auto?

According to PCMag, you need to be over 18 and signed in with a personal Google account. PCMag and Engadget both report that the feature is available everywhere in Android Auto except the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria.

Not every outlet mentions that last part. The Verge and TechCrunch don’t, and TechCrunch describes the broader Personal Intelligence feature as in beta in global markets. If you live outside the US, check the setting before you count on it.

It’s also unclear whether the Android Auto rollout hit everyone on day one or is arriving in stages. Google said it started Oct. 20, and nothing more specific has been reported. If you don’t see the option yet, that may just be timing.

How to turn it on

Per PCMag, you do the setup in the Gemini app or on the Gemini website, not on the car screen. Go to Settings > Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps. Apps you connect there carry over into the car.

The feature is off by default. According to the reports, Gemini doesn’t connect to any of your apps until you enable the Personal Intelligence setting yourself. So if you do nothing, nothing changes.

Personal Intelligence arrived in Gemini earlier this year, first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. A March expansion brought it to free accounts. If you’ve already set it up on your phone for regular Gemini chats, check which apps you connected back then, because they may be the same ones the car can now use.

Which apps should you connect?

The list in Google’s announcement is Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search. You don’t have to connect all of them. Google says you can choose which apps Gemini can access.

One wrinkle: PCMag says Gmail and Calendar are grouped under Workspace in the connected-apps settings. Whether you can connect one without the other hasn’t been reported, so look at the screen before assuming.

I’d match the apps to what you actually ask for in the car:

  • Gmail and Calendar: useful if you want Gemini to find a ticket or an appointment without you reading out an address. Google’s own example has a driver heading to the airport asking for their flight gate and whether the flight is on time.
  • Maps and Search: the least surprising ones for a driving assistant.
  • Photos: PCMag notes Gemini can use it for places you’ve visited before. It’s also the one I’d hold back at first, since your photo library holds more personal material than a calendar does.

Start narrow and add apps later. You can always widen it.

How to limit it or switch it off

Google says you can turn Personal Intelligence off at any time and change which apps Gemini can reach. Since the connections live in the Gemini settings, that’s the first place to look. Remove an app there to cut off its data, or turn the whole feature off.

Turning it off won’t break your car. Google says navigation, music, calls and questions still work without Personal Intelligence. The difference is that answers aren’t tailored to you.

There’s a second control that doesn’t involve any menus. According to The Verge, which quotes Google, personalized responses are shared only when your phone is connected to the car. Android Auto runs on the phone and projects navigation, media and messaging onto the infotainment screen, so the phone is the center of this either way. If yours rides loose in a cupholder, a dash mount like the iOttie Easy One Touch 5 is one way to keep it in place.

What Google says you can ask

Google’s examples all show requests that skip the usual details. They’re Google’s own illustrations, not independently tested results.

  • Ask to be taken to your “doctor’s appointment” without giving an address.
  • Find a car wash from a photo you took last week and navigate there.
  • In a new city, ask for dinner along your route, and Gemini factors in preferences such as being vegetarian.
  • Ask about your flight gate and whether it’s on time. Gemini finds the ticket in Gmail, runs a separate flight-status search and answers both at once.

On that last one, outlets disagree. Most say Gemini finds the confirmation in Gmail. TechCrunch instead describes a Calendar-based alert that warns a driver on the way to the airport about a delayed flight. I’d go with the Gmail version, which is how most outlets describe Google’s example.

Google also says you can make complex natural-language requests, including follow-up questions that Gemini answers together. It says the update improves Gemini’s reasoning in cars and gives more specific answers. That’s a company claim, and there are no independent tests yet.

What this means for your commute

If you drive with Android Auto, you can try this today (region and rollout timing permitting) and shut it off if you don’t like it. Gemini first came to Android Auto in November 2025, so this is the next layer on an assistant you may already use.

If your car has Google built-in, you wait. That’s software integrated directly into the vehicle rather than projected from your phone. Carmakers that have shipped newer cars with it include Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar, and Gemini reached those cars in April. Personal Intelligence is promised for them “in the coming months,” with no firm date.

Then there’s the trade-off. TechCrunch says millions of cars, trucks and SUVs already have Gemini, though that’s the outlet’s characterization and there’s no official number behind it. TechCrunch also suggests that tying more of your life to Google’s ecosystem might make some people uncomfortable. That’s its commentary, not a reported finding. My view: the opt-in design and per-app controls are reasonable, and the sensible approach is to connect the one or two apps that earn their place and leave the rest off.

Questions Google hasn’t answered

Several practical gaps are still open:

  • Which makes and models with Google built-in get Personal Intelligence first, and when.
  • Why the EEA, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria are excluded, and whether they’ll get it later.
  • How personal data is processed and stored for in-car requests, and whether any of it is processed on the device.
  • How it behaves in shared cars, multi-driver households or rentals, and what happens to personal data there.
  • Whether Google Workspace accounts from work or school will be supported. Only personal accounts have been named.
  • Whether Google has done safety testing on driver distraction.

The last one matters because a feature that invites more conversation with your car deserves some evidence behind it. Google hasn’t shared any.
