Key takeaways

  • Google Docs and Google Drive now support Markdown (.md) files natively, so you can open, edit and collaborate without converting the file into a Doc.
  • The change covers all Google Workspace users and personal Google accounts, and it is on by default, including on admin-controlled accounts.
  • The rollout began around Oct. 5-6, 2026 and can take up to 15 days to reach everyone, so some accounts won't see it yet.
  • Reports don't say whether edits save back to the original .md file, so Obsidian users should keep a backup copy until that is confirmed.

Google began rolling out native Markdown support in Google Drive and Google Docs around Oct. 5-6, 2026. You can open a .md file, edit it with other people and comment on it without turning it into a regular Doc first. Here is what the reports say about how it works, what to try, and what to check if you don’t see it.

One note on method: this guide is built from three published reports (9to5Google, Android Authority and Neowin). We have not tested the feature ourselves, and none of them publish exact menu steps. Where the details are missing, we say so.

What does Google Docs Markdown support actually do?

Google Docs and Drive now treat Markdown (.md) files as a native file type. You can open, edit and collaborate on them without changing the file type or converting them into a Doc. According to 9to5Google, Docs renders the Markdown formatting in full and supports real-time editing and comments.

That is a change from before. 9to5Google reports that Google added Markdown support to Drive in earlier steps over several years, but those steps mostly converted Markdown into a format Docs could use. Conversion is the part that goes away.

How do I open and edit a .md file in Google Docs?

Google’s pitch is that you open the .md file and edit it in Docs, with no conversion step. The reports do not describe the exact clicks, such as a menu path or an Open with option. We won’t invent them. That detail is not yet reported.

A sensible first test, which is our suggestion and not something Google specified:

  • Upload or locate a small, low-stakes .md file in Drive.
  • Open it the way you would open any document there.
  • Check whether headings, links and tables render, and whether you can type directly in the file.

If the file still arrives as a converted Doc, that likely means the feature hasn’t reached your account yet. That is our inference, not something the sources state.

What does Google Drive show for Markdown files?

Drive can now show rendered Markdown files rather than raw text. According to 9to5Google and Android Authority, that includes clickable links and structured tables. Android Authority also mentions headings and subheadings in the rendered view.

For students and writers, this means you can check a file’s structure from Drive before opening it. Whether other Markdown elements render the same way, such as code blocks or task lists, is not yet reported.

Can I comment on and share Markdown files with other people?

Yes, according to 9to5Google. Docs supports real-time editing and comments on Markdown files, so the usual collaboration tools apply to a .md file without the conversion detour. Google says this lets people and AI agents work together without anyone writing raw syntax or converting files by hand, and without giving up Docs’ live editing and commenting.

Android Authority describes a concrete case. A document made in a Markdown editor such as Obsidian can be imported into Docs and shared with a team, with its formatting preserved. That example comes only from Android Authority, so treat it as that outlet’s description of how the feature works.

What should Obsidian and other Markdown editor users check first?

Start with a copy, not your main vault. The reports don’t say whether edits made in Docs save back to the original .md file, or whether syntax survives a round trip with tools like Obsidian. Those are open questions.

A cautious routine, again our suggestion:

  • Duplicate one note and test the import on the copy.
  • Check that headings, links and tables look right in Docs.
  • Make an edit, then reopen the file in your Markdown editor and compare it with the original.
  • Only then move real project notes over.

Features like front matter, footnotes and code blocks are not covered in the reports. If your notes rely on them, test those first.

Why can’t I see Markdown support in my Google account yet?

Most likely the rollout hasn’t reached you. Google started the gradual rollout on the announcement day, and it may take up to 15 days to reach all users. Counting from Oct. 5-6, that puts the end of the window in the second half of October 2026.

The sources differ by a day on the announcement date. 9to5Google’s article is dated Oct. 5 and says the rollout starts that day. Android Authority timestamps its piece Oct. 6 at 2:39 AM ET. Time zones and publishing timing probably explain it.

If you still don’t see the feature, run through this checklist:

  • Account type. Google says the support applies to all Workspace users and personal Google accounts, so the type of account shouldn’t be the issue.
  • Timing. If it’s been less than about 15 days since Oct. 5-6, wait.
  • Admin-managed accounts. 9to5Google reports the feature is on by default even on admin-controlled accounts. Whether admins can turn it off is not yet reported, so if you’re on a work or school account and still waiting after the window, ask your admin.
  • Behavior. If a .md file still converts into a Doc, you are probably seeing the older behavior.

Why is Google adding Markdown support now?

The AI angle is central. Google says the change helps AI use cases, including AI agents collaborating on documents and syncing with Gemini Notebook. Android Authority reports that Google highlighted Markdown as a format large language models usually prefer. In that outlet’s telling, this makes it easier to draft documents with Gemini or similar AI assistants inside Docs.

Chandu Thota, a Google executive whose exact title the sources don’t give, makes a similar point in 9to5Google’s report. He describes Markdown as the format that people and AI agents now share when they communicate.

Our read: Google wants one file that a person, a teammate and an AI assistant can all work on in the same place. The Markdown crowd, including note-takers and developers, gets a nicer experience along the way.

Why it matters for you

Students and writers: If you draft in Obsidian or another Markdown editor, you may no longer need to paste text into a Doc and fix the formatting by hand before sharing it with a teacher, editor or classmate. Test with a copy first.

Teams on Workspace: A .md file can sit in Drive and be edited and commented on live, like any other document. If your team keeps documentation or notes in Markdown, this removes a conversion step. The rollout window is about two weeks, so don’t be surprised if colleagues get it on different days.

Admins and IT: The feature is on by default, even for managed accounts, according to 9to5Google. If you set policy for your organization, check your admin console after rollout and confirm what controls exist. The reports don’t describe any.

People using Gemini in Docs: Google frames Markdown as friendlier to AI assistants, so drafts that start in the format may fit those tools more naturally. How that works in practice is not detailed in the reports.

What we don’t know yet

  • Which Markdown features are supported, such as code blocks, task lists, footnotes or front matter, and how unsupported ones are handled.
  • Whether edits save back to the original .md file, and whether round trips with Obsidian keep syntax intact.
  • Whether admins can turn the feature off.
  • File-size limits, and which Markdown flavors (CommonMark or GitHub-flavored) are supported.
  • What the Gemini Notebook sync involves, and how AI agents can read or write Markdown files in Drive.
  • Whether the feature works in the mobile apps and in Workspace apps beyond Docs and Drive.
  • Exact menu steps for opening a .md file in Docs.

We will update this guide when Google publishes documentation or when we can confirm these points.
