Coming tomorrow. Four engineering books go free on Kindle from Fri 6 Nov 00:00 PT, for 5 days only, and you can read them with no Kindle device at all.
This how-to was published during a free Kindle week for four engineering books in November 2026. The steps apply to any Kindle ebook.
A Kindle ebook isn't tied to a Kindle. It belongs to your Amazon account, and you can open it on most screens you already own.
Step 1: use the right Amazon account
Sign in to the Amazon store for your country. Purchases, including those at no charge, attach to that account. If you have accounts in two countries, use the one where you want to keep your library.
Step 2: install a reader
Amazon's Kindle app is available for Android, iPhone and iPad, and there are versions for Windows and Mac. There is also a browser-based reader at read.amazon.com for times when you can't install anything. All of them use the same library, and your reading position syncs between devices.
Step 3: place the order, then open the app
Order the ebook on Amazon's website, then look for it in the app's library. On an iPhone or iPad it is usually simplest to do this in the Safari browser, because the app itself may not offer the same buying options. Once the order goes through, pull down to refresh and the book should appear.
Picking the best screen
Different books suit different devices. A novel is comfortable on a phone or an e-ink reader. Technical books are another matter, because diagrams and tables need room. Our comparison of e-readers and tablets goes through the trade-offs, and if you are thinking about hardware, our Paperwhite guide covers the current models.
Useful features people miss
The apps do more than show pages. You can search a whole book for a term, highlight passages, add notes and jump between them from a single list. For reference books that is often more useful than the reading itself, because you can return to a formula in seconds. Bookmarks also help when you're moving between a worked example and the chapter that explains it.
If your subscription questions go further, our note on the move from Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+ explains that change.

Already read it?
If you read it and it helps, an honest rating or review on the Amazon store where you downloaded it would mean a lot. It is entirely optional.
