Three days left. A GD&T guide with a drawing for every concept is free on Kindle, with three companion books, until Tue 10 Nov 23:59 PT. Time remaining: ends Tue 10 Nov, 11:59 pm PT.
This datum explainer was published during a free Kindle week for four engineering books in November 2026.
Ask two people to measure the distance from a hole to an edge and you may get two answers, especially if the edge isn't perfectly straight. Datums exist to remove that argument. They define exactly where measurement begins.
Locking a part in space
A loose part can slide along three directions and rotate about three axes. Those are its six degrees of freedom. To measure it consistently, you have to remove all six, and that is what a datum reference frame does.
The classic version uses three surfaces.
- The primary datum is often a large flat face. The part rests on it, touching at a minimum of three points.
- The secondary datum is usually an edge or side, pushed against two points.
- The tertiary datum needs one point of contact to stop the final sliding motion.
This is the 3-2-1 idea, and it reflects how a part is actually held in a fixture.
Why the order matters
Datums on a drawing are listed in order, and swapping them isn't a harmless edit. Because real surfaces aren't perfectly square to one another, the part sits differently depending on which face goes down first. The same part can pass under one order and fail under another.
So the order should mirror function. If a bracket bolts flat against a wing rib, that mounting face is the natural primary datum, because it's how the part will sit in service.
Common mistakes
Beginners often choose datums because they are convenient to measure, not because they matter to the assembly. Another mistake is picking a small or rough feature as primary, which makes the setup unstable and results hard to repeat.
The 2018 standard revised some of the details around how datums are stabilised and established, so it's worth checking any older notes. Our piece on what the exam now tests has the broader context.
