Something to practise on. Four engineering books packed with worked problems are free on Kindle until Tue 10 Nov 23:59 PT. Time remaining: ends Tue 10 Nov, 11:59 pm PT.
This study guide was published during a free Kindle week for four engineering books in November 2026. Its advice applies to any technical book.
Buying a technical book is easy, and finishing it is rare. Fortunately you rarely need to finish one. You need to be able to use what it teaches, and that calls for a different routine from reading a novel.
Start with the problem, not chapter one
Pick something you need this month: an exam topic, a calculation at work, a term a colleague keeps using. Search the ebook for it and begin there. Motivation holds up much better when each session answers a real question.
Cover the worked example
Worked examples are the most valuable pages in any engineering book, and the most wasted. Reading one feels like understanding it. So read the problem, then hide the solution and try it on paper. When you get stuck, look only at the next line. Getting it wrong is useful, because you now know exactly what you didn't follow.
Test yourself the next day
Rereading feels productive but tends to fade fast. Trying to recall something from memory takes more effort and tends to stick better. At the end of a session, write down two or three questions. Answer them tomorrow with the book closed, then again a week later.
Keep notes short and your own
Long highlights give a false sense of progress. Use the highlight and notes features sparingly, and rewrite the key idea in a sentence of your own. That list of notes becomes a personal index you can search later. AI chat tools can help by quizzing you on your summary, provided you write a clear prompt and check the answers against the book.
Protect short sessions
Twenty-five focused minutes on most days will beat a long weekend session you keep postponing. Keep the book open on a decent monitor or tablet if diagrams matter, and stop while you still know what comes next. That makes the following session much easier to begin.
