This free promotion has ended. The books are available on Amazon.

Day two of five. A GD&T study guide written for the 2018 exam is free on Kindle for 5 days only, along with three other engineering books, until Tue 10 Nov 23:59 PT. Time remaining: ends Tue 10 Nov, 11:59 pm PT.

A GD&T study guide written for the 2018 exam had a free Kindle week in November 2026. The change behind it still matters.

When ASME launched its updated GDTP 2018 certification on 29 June 2026, it tied the Technologist and Senior exams to ASME Y14.5-2018, the current edition of the US standard for drawing symbols and rules. For anyone who learned GD&T from older material, that is more than a change of date on a certificate.

Two familiar symbols are gone

The headline change is a removal. Y14.5-2018 dropped concentricity and symmetry, two controls that were long taught and often misunderstood. Both asked an inspector to establish median points across a feature, which is awkward to measure, and in practice they were frequently checked some other way. Designers are now pointed towards position, runout or profile instead.

The controls are not outlawed from every drawing on earth. An older drawing that cites an earlier edition stays governed by that edition, so engineers may meet both languages in one working week. An exam, though, tests one edition.

Additions matter as well

The 2018 text also added tools, including the dynamic profile modifier, which lets profile refine the form of a surface without tightening its location. Datum rules were revised too. Taken together, a candidate who has only memorised 2009 habits can give a confident answer that is simply wrong under the edition being examined.

Why ASME is pushing it now

ASME's announcement frames the update around model-based definition and product manufacturing information, where tolerances travel inside the 3D model rather than on a paper print. That matters because software reads those annotations, and a machine is less forgiving of a loose habit than a colleague is. It is the same shift we covered in how AI is reaching engineering documentation.

The certification is valid for three years, and ASME lists separate 2018 Technologist and Senior exams. You don't have to hold Technologist first to qualify for Senior.

What this means for candidates

Check the edition printed on any study material before relying on it. Then go through the differences first, because that is where old knowledge does the most damage. Yesterday's overview of the four books explains how the set fits together. The guide highlighted below is an unofficial study aid and is not endorsed by ASME.
